The glitzy, three-story floating casinos that define this adult waterfront playland were picked up and hurled as much as a mile onto streets and sidewalks when Hurricane Katrina came blasting through over a week ago. Some were split in half, their slot machines spilling out into the Gulf of Mexico as if Mother Nature had hit the jackpot.

Grand Casino Gulfport was operated in Gulfport, Mississippi, by Caesars Entertainment prior to being sold to Harrah's Entertainment in 2005. The property consisted of two hotels with a total of 1,000 rooms, and a 90,000 square foot casino barge. Before the name of the property could be changed, Hurricane Katrina made its second landfall as a Category 3 storm on the morning of Monday, August 29, 2005, and, among other things, destroyed the Grand Casino Gulfport. The casino barge washed ashore and partly blocked Beach Boulevard (U.S. Highway 90), the beach front's main roadway. In an effort to clear the road, the casino was imploded on September 21, 2005.
